About the MHeNS Research Divisions:

The key role of the three Research Divisions of MHeNS

The three divisions of MHeNS are of great importance for MHeNS and its research infrastructure and community of researchers. They ensure our integrated approach among the various disciplines in Neuroscience, Behavioural Science, Bioinformatics and the wider areas of Medicine and Life Sciences. Each of the divisions brings together researchers from different departments and a wide range of disciplinary backgrounds and fosters interdisciplinary research and education through regular seminars, workshops, training events and other means of academic interaction.
The purpose of the divisions is to join forces to coordinate and stimulate research within MHeNS and to structure it and to promote international cooperation by:

  • promoting and coordinating interdisciplinary research within MHeNS as a leading research school in diverse fields and disciplines and throughout the research chain from basic  fundamental research to translational research;
  • to take responsibility for the practical usefulness and exploitation of the research in all these areas and disciplines;
  • promoting communication between researchers (trans- and multidisciplinary) in the various research lines, PI groups, departments and other collaborating partners in research and promoting national and international collaboration and PhD programmes;
  • maintaining close contact with clinicians at MUMC, particularly the Brain and Nerve Centre and the Centre for Ophthalmology, and many other national and international clinical centres of excellence.

The MHeNS divisions have a shared mission to provide inspiring and innovative research environments for both junior and senior researchers and to promote the development of scientific knowledge and collaboration.

Division 1. Cognitive Neuropsychiatry & Clinical Neuroscience

Division leader: Professor Frans Verhey
Division Deputies: Prof. C. van Heugten / Prof. R. van Oostenbrugge

Aim and mission of Division 1

Researchers in this division investigate both the effects of biological, neuropsychological and psychosocial factors, and the effects of ageing on cognition, and on the progression of neurological diseases itself. This division focuses particularly on late life event problems and ageing. Research of Division 1 is related to neuropsychiatric and neurological disorders studied in clinical cohorts (e.g. patients with Alzheimer’s disease, stroke and brain injury) and in cohorts of healthy ageing subjects, focusing on cognitive functioning. Research and care are highly integrated in center, such as the Alzheimer Centrum Limburg, the Brain Injury Center, and the Center for Movement Disorders.

With respect to the core topics, the focus is upon

  • Neurodegeneration of the CNS: Alzheimer’s disease and its prodromal phases, other dementias
  • Vascular Cognitive Impairment and Stroke
  • Parkinson’s disease,
  • Peripheral nervous system disease,
  • Acquired brain damage,
  • MS
  • Epilepsy

Strategy

The Division Cognitive Neuropsychiatry & Clinical Neuroscience (CNP&CNS) performs fundamental and applied multi-disciplinary research on cognitive disorders and other neurological and otorinolaryngological disorders, to generate new insights into the mechanisms of these conditions. The ultimate goal is to improve diagnosis and treatment, and quality of life of people with cognitive and other neurological disorders.

At the division level, each division leader directs all research projects and educational activities at the level of the division. Within the divisions, senior researchers in the position of post-doc, assistant, associate and full professor lead a group of researchers on a specific theme. The divisions have their own division structure with research and expert groups. More information on the specific research groups is available by clicking here.

Education during COVID-19

What does education in the Data Science and Artificial Intelligence programme look like during COVID-19? One of our lecturers, Dr. Marieke Musegaas, tells you all about it.

Building tour: Paul-Henri Spaaklaan 1

We moved into a brand new building this January, and then the COVID-19 pandemic happened... While we still have on-site education going on, we haven't had time to create a proper building tour.

We did, however, strap a GoPro camera to a random employee and made them walk all over the building. Here's the result of that: this is our building, Paul-Henri Spaaklaan 1!

A day in the life of a student

A day in the life of... 2nd year Data Science and Artificial Intelligence student Meijke Thijsen.

After your bachelor's programme in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence

Iulia Feroli recently graduated with a bachelor's in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence. She went on to become a Cloud Solution Architect (focusing on Data Science and AI) at Microsoft.

How did she get there? What's it like and how did her studies prepare her for that? Meet Iulia!

Where are all the robots?

So, about those robots in our advertising...

They're genuine! On the second floor we have our DKE Lab, where you can find - among others - the guys from SwarmLab. In this video, they tell you where and when you'll encounter them and their robots during the study programme.

Questions?

We're happy to help you - send an e-mail to info-dke@maastrichtuniversity.nl or check whether the answer to your question can be found on our programme website.

How to apply

Ready to apply? The application and enrolment process consists of three phases. More information on each of these phases is provided below. Carefully read through the information provided and make sure to complete all tasks as soon as possible (and definitely before the indicated deadlines).

Important deadlines

Phase 1: Apply via Studielink

Let us know you want to apply for this study programme

To start the application process for this pre-master's programme, you first need to apply via Studielink. Studielink is the Dutch central organisation that keeps track of applications and enrolments at institutions of higher education in the Netherlands. In Studielink, you can apply by indicating which study programme at Maastricht University (UM) you would like to apply for, whether you’d like to start the programme in September or February, what previous education you followed, and you might need to provide a number of other details.

Studielink offers two methods of signing in: with or without using DigiD:

  • If you live in a Dutch municipality, you can only register using your DigiD. If you live in a Dutch municipality, but do not yet have a DigiD yet, you will need to request one (Apply for a DigiD).
  • If you do not (yet) live in the Netherlands, you can register by creating a Studielink account (without DigiD). As your personal details will not have been verified through DigiD, UM will check your personal details.

Apply via Studielink

Please note:

  • You have to select your ‘starting moment’ in Studielink. Please make sure to select the right month and year in the dropdown-menu, so that you are applying for a start of the study programme in next academic year.
  • You will receive an email from UM within 24 hours of having applied in Studielink. This email contains your username/UM student number and a link to create your personal password. You can use these login details to access the MyApplication portal, the online environment in which the rest of your application process will take place. The portal will provide you with a clear overview of all the tasks you need to complete, such as uploading documents and paying your study fees.

Phase 2: Admission

Allow UM to assess if you meet the admission requirements

MyApplication portal

To allow UM to assess whether you qualify for admission to the study programme of your choice, you need to complete a number of tasks in the MyApplication portal, the online environment in which the rest of your application process will take place. All the tasks you need to complete, such as uploading certain documents, will be presented here in a clear overview. You can log into the portal using your username/UM student number and the password you have created (your login name and an explanation on how to create your own password are provided in the email you received from us after your application in Studielink).

Make sure you fulfil the tasks indicated in the MyApplication portal on time. This means that you should upload documents as soon as you have finalised them and/or have them in your possession. The sooner you complete a task, the sooner we can give you feedback if you need to add or correct anything. Please pay attention to the deadlines indicated, as they can differ per study programme.

Once you have completed all of your admission tasks, your application dossier is ready to be presented to the Board of Admissions. Depending on your programme, this will be done immediately when it is complete (rolling basis), or after an indicated deadline.

Required documents

During the application process for this pre-master's programme, you will need to complete a number of tasks for which you will often have to upload documents in the ‘MyApplication portal’.

Status updates about your application

From now on, you will receive important information and calls to action regarding your application in the message inbox in the MyApplication portal. We recommend that you regularly log in to the portal to make sure you stay updated. However, we will also notify you of important changes via the email address you provided to Studielink.

Phase 3: Enrolment

Arrange the practical matters required to start your studies at UM

Once you have been offered a place in the pre-master's programme, you need to arrange your enrolment. The tasks you need to complete to be enrolled are listed in the MyApplication portal under ‘Enrolment tasks’. You can find a brief overview below.

Pay your study fee

Every applicant will need to pay their study fee. More information on how to go about arranging your study fee payment is provided in the task description in the MyApplication portal.

Once you’ve received an invite to pay your study fee, it is important that you indicate how you wish to arrange your payment (in Studielink). Do so on time (in any case before the start of your studies). Please also make sure that you pay (the first instalment of) your study fee in a timely manner. Otherwise, you won’t be able to start your studies.

Allow UM to verify your diploma

Dutch diplomas
Did you acquire the diploma on the basis of which you have been offered a place in your study programme in the Netherlands? Then DUO will pass on their verification of your diploma to UM. No further action on your part is required.

Non-Dutch diplomas
Did you acquire the diploma on the basis of which you have been offered a place in your study programme outside of the Netherlands? Then you will need to send a certified copy of that diploma.

Have you completed your previous education outside of the Netherlands and will you not receive your diploma before the start of your study programme? Then you can send a certified graduation statement.

More information on the requirements for a certified copy of a diploma and for a certified graduation statement, as well as the address these documents should be posted to, is provided in the task description in the MyApplication portal.

Make sure all application and enrolment tasks are fulfilled

UM can only enrol you if you have completed all the tasks in the MyApplication portal. Please make sure this is the case, so that your application and enrolment can be completed and you’ll be ready to start preparing for your studies as soon as possible.

Confirmation of Enrolment

When you have been enrolled for your study programme at UM, you will receive confirmation of this from UM (in the message inbox in the MyApplication portal) and from Studielink (by email).

UM email account
Before you start your studies, you will receive the login details for your UM email account. Your UM email address will be used for all correspondence about your introduction programme and the start of your studies. Your private email address will only be used to inform you about the application and enrolment process.

How do we assess your application?

When you want to apply or are applying to this study programme, it is useful to know how we assess your application. You can find more information about this below.

  1. Board of Admission evaluates application
The Board of Admission evaluates the quality of your application by looking at your grades, motivation, relevant work experience, international experience and extra-curricular activities, and GMAT or GRE score (if applicable). Additionally, the Board of Admissions assesses if your previous education is a related or unrelated degree as explained under the admission requirements. Finally, the Board of Admissions assesses if your deficiencies can be eliminated in the SBE pre-master you applied to. Based on this information, the Board of Admission will decide whether you can be admitted to the programme or not.

  2. Rolling basis evaluations: decision within 2-4 weeks after completion
Assessment happens on a rolling basis. This means that, once you submit a complete file with all the minimum required scores, it will be presented to the Board of Admission. We will not wait until the deadline before we present your file to the Board. You will receive a decision within 2-4 weeks after completion of your file.

In the framework of the UM Cares project, UM has established a network for parents and carers.
This network serves two main purposes: firstly, it has a peer support function for students and staff with caring responsibilities to connect and share experiences. Secondly it serves as a sounding board for input and feedback for the UM Cares project and for informing the UM community about the project progress.

Join the network!

The network is open for all students and staff with caring responsibilities to join.
Email us from your UM account to register for the network by clicking the green button.

On 12 November 2020 the PAC network was launched with an online event. Staff and students shared their stories and expectations for this network in two videos.
In the first video staff and students are taking a lead, and in the second video the organisation's point of view is shared by UM's managers and a study advisor.

You are not the only one!
Observant recently had a nice interview with two UM students with caring responsibilties.

Online platform in MS Teams

We choose to use MS Teams as an online platform. A place where you can find useful information and resources for both parents and carers, in English and in Dutch. Also you can contact, chat or video call with a peer member from the network.

Once registerd for the PAC network, you will receive an invitation for the Teams environment.
