"Exposure to Inter-Parental Violence and Child Development: An Exploration in the Context of Tanzania"

This study explores how children in Tanzania are affected when they are exposed to violence between their parents and how they can be better supported. It draws on children’s own stories and feelings to understand what helps them stay strong and what puts them at greater risk of such exposure. The research translated and used a Swahili version of the Children’s Exposure to Domestic Violence (CEDV) scale to assess their experiences in a way that reflects Tanzanian culture and context. The study found that this kind of violence causes children deep emotional pain and stress; resulting in designing a new programme called EmoNest (“Hisia Salama”) to support children aged 9 to 12 who have witnessed or been directly involved in violence from their parents. The study highlights the importance of listening to children’s voices and provides practical, culturally grounded ways to protect, support, and heal those affected by family violence.
