Career history
Full Professor of Functional Genetics
Prof. Mariman studied chemistry at the University of Nijmegen, the Netherlands, from 1973 until 1979. In 1978 he received the Unilever Chemistry Award. At the Department of Biochemistry of the same university he performed fundamental research on RNA-splicing and in 1983 he received his PhD degree with a thesis entitled “Some aspects of pre-mRNA splicing”. As a postdoctoral scientist he investigated the molecular mechanisms underlying rheumatic disease. In 1985 he moved to the Department of Human Genetics where he was appointed as senior research scientist. As Associate Professor of Molecular Genetics in 1990 he became the head of the Molecular Research Division of the Department until 1995, when he was appointed head of the Division of DNA-diagnostics of the Clinical Genetics Center of the Academic Hospital in Nijmegen with all its aspects of patient-care, quality control and technological innovation. He was also responsible for the DNA-sequencing and genotyping facility of the Hospital. He supervised the Research Division on Multifactorial Disorders of the Department of Human Genetics. Main area of interest was the identification of genetic risk factors for human neural tube defects. Because of the increased international attention for complex disorders, this section was extended and additional topics were added including dyslexia and Crohns disease. As associate professor, a new field of interest, i.e. the pharmacogenetics, was explored and preparations for the implementation of a new research line in this direction were set up. In 2001 he was appointed Professor of Functional Genetics at the Department of Human Biology/NUTRIM School for Nutrition, Toxicology and Metabolism of Maastricht University, the Netherlands. The major line of research concerns gene-nutrient interactions in relation to complex human disorders like obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Special research niche: weight regain after weight loss, the yoyo-effect. He is (co)author more than 200 peer reviewed scientific publications.
