Become a book or volunteer at the Living Library UM50
Would you be open to having 20-minute conversations about your experiences that could challenge assumptions and create new connections?
At the Living Library, the 'books' are people. Instead of borrowing a book to read, visitors choose a title from the catalogue and sit down with that person for a 20-minute conversation.
As a Living Book, you share only what you feel comfortable sharing. The conversation is a two-way exchange: visitors can ask questions, you can respond in your own way, and you can also ask questions in return.
You don't need to prepare a speech or tell your whole life story. The aim is simply to have an open, respectful conversation that can help challenge assumptions and build greater understanding.
Each conversation will usually be with one reader. If many readers show up and you are open to it, there may be small groups of two or three readers. That will always be your choice.
Who can be a Living Book?
We are looking for UM students, staff and alumni, as well as local residents, who are willing to speak about an experience, identity or part of their life that may be misunderstood, stereotyped or rarely discussed openly.
You decide what your book title is and which topics you are comfortable discussing.
What happens during the event?
Visitors browse the Living Library catalogue and choose a book they would like to borrow, based on the book title and the language(s) they speak. Each conversation lasts 20 minutes, with the option to extend for another 5 or 10 minutes to wrap up.
You may have several conversations during the event, with as many breaks as you need in between.
You are always free to decline a question by saying "This page is not available", or to end a conversation if something doesn't feel right.
A team of volunteers and organisers will be there throughout the event to support you. Before each conversation begins, a volunteer will briefly go through the ground rules with you and your reader to help create a respectful and comfortable conversation.
Why be a Living Book?
Being a Living Book is an opportunity to meet people you might not otherwise encounter, have meaningful conversations and help others look beyond labels and assumptions.
You don't need any previous experience, just a willingness to have an open conversation.

Prefer to help behind the scenes? Become a volunteer
You don’t have to be a Living Book to take part. We’re also looking for volunteers to help make the Living Library welcoming and enjoyable for everyone.
As a volunteer, you might help welcome visitors, explain how the Living Library works, guide people to their conversations, support the Living Books, or help with practical tasks during the event.
You don’t need any previous experience. We’ll make sure you know what to expect and what your role involves during an orientation session before the event starts. Lunch will be provided.
