Why did you choose to study Global Studies in Maastricht?
I was looking for an interdisciplinary programme because I am interested in many things. Global Studies is such a unique programme. The wide range of subjects and its interdisciplinary nature appealed to me. I haven’t seen it anywhere else. I also like the location of Maastricht itself, situated between Belgium and Germany and even close to France.
What do you enjoy most about your studies?
It’s very contemporary and relevant. It’s not just theory, it’s very practical. My favourite theme so far is environment and the economy. We look at how we ensure economic growth while keeping our planet healthy. Also, I really like the two-year intensive language course because I enjoy studying languages. You can choose one language to study alongside your degree, and I’ve chosen French. In summary, it’s the best of both worlds for me. Global studies is a good pick because it is truly interdisciplinary and teaches students to understand and tackle global issues.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
The research methods I’ve learned so far will definitely help me tackle complex issues in any job. And next to that, I learn a lot about soft skills such as empathy. That will really help me become a global citizen. After this, I want to do a master’s degree in something connected to the environment. After that, I hope to work in an international setting. My short-term goal would be to stay in academia. Because I’d like to do more research on environmental issues or take on a teaching position. My longer-term goal would be to work for the UN one day, especially with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) or NATO, for example.
How do you like living in Maastricht?
The city has grown on me. I feel at home here. It’s pretty small compared to the other cities. When I’m cycling around, it feels like this city is made for students! I love reading, so the Dominicanen Bookstore is definitely a favourite. It’s in a former church and is really beautiful.
