NWO fund for ‘Am AI Right?’
A research project of the Faculty of Law was awarded funding from the Dutch Research Council (Dutch: Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek/NWO). ‘Am AI Right?’, a research project created by an interdisciplinary team of researchers of the Law and Tech Lab and the Brightlands Institute for Smart Society (BISS), aims to revolutionize access to legal expertise.
The research combines AI technology and qualitative research methods to enhance individuals’ knowledge and understanding of the law. Many people encounter legal issues, which, when unresolved, can cause problems. Access to legal information can empower individuals, yet individuals often need to assume self-representation roles in a potential or actual legal dispute.
‘Am AI Right?’ seeks to discover how laypeople formulate queries when seeking legal information, how different types of queries affect the quality of relevant legal rules retrieved by AI, and how AI can be trained to provide legally valid information in a way understandable to different target audiences.
SSH Open Competition L
The SSH Open Competition L funding instrument is open to research proposals with a research question and/or problem statement within the social sciences and humanities. Within this framework, there are no further thematic restrictions, and the applicant is in principle free to choose the desired form of subsidy. The instrument is aimed at excellent disciplinary, interdisciplinary, and multidisciplinary research. This also includes fundamental scientific research.
