Jacob Moody (J.E.)

I am a PhD candidate researching the impact of crises on sustainability transitions supervised by Prof. Frank Boons and Nicole Rijkens-Klomp. Empirically, I am focusing on the recent 'energy crisis' (exacerbated by the Russian invasion of Ukraine) and its impacts on the ongoing energy transitions in both the Netherlands and the UK. Theoretically, I am employing (strategic action) field theory and theories of practice to understand changes to energy provisioning fields and everyday life in the household.

Throughout this research, I aim to unpack the idea of crisis-as-process, seeing the energy crisis not as a single, exogenous shock event, but rather a socially produced process shaped by actors and the practices in which they perform. I therefore take inspiration from multiple sub-disciplines of Sociology (Processual- , Relational-, and Historical Sociology being the main ones) and also gather inspiration from neighboring disciplines such as Political Science, Geography, and Science and Technology Studies. In short, I see myself in the discipline of post-disciplines - or inter-disciplinary, if you will.

Fifty percent of my time is spent on teaching, with most of my teaching activities within the MSc programme 'Sustainability Science, Policy, and Society'. I co-coordinate the course 'Sustainability Science' and tutor in courses such as 'Policy for Sustainable Innovation', 'Methods for Sustainability Assessment', and 'Reporting and Measuring on Corporate Activities'.

I previously studied the MSc in Sustainability Science, Policy, and Society (Maastricht University), as well as an MSc in International Business and Strategy (Lancaster University), before undertaking this PhD.  I also undertook a research visit to the Sustainable Consumption Institute at the University of Manchester (with my experiences written in this blog).
