Honorary doctorate for MIT professor Robert Langer

During the celebration of the 47th Dies Natalis on 27 January 2023, US professor Robert S. Langer received UM's honorary doctorate. Professor Langer is a world-renowned scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is considered the founder of tissue engineering in regenerative medicine and pioneered hundreds of technologies.

Professor Langer began his career as a chemical engineer but has contributed to many fields of science and engineering. His contributions to medicine and biotechnology, both in academia and industry, are impressive and inspiring. Key aspects of his work that are closely related to work at UM lie in medical technology, in particular regenerative medicine, and in entrepreneurship in society.

His interdisciplinary and translational approach is a perfect match not only with that of the UM Faculty of Science and Engineering, which nominated Professor Langer for the honorary doctorate, but also with the university as a whole.
