Second Maastricht Europe Days
The Maastricht Europe Days will be held this year from Friday 6 to Sunday 8 December. Central to the three days is the future of Europe, elaborated in theater performances, workshops, exhibitions, sports and network events and debates, at various places in the city with journalists, European experts, opinion makers, students and residents. The event offers a broad, international programme for young and old.
The Maastricht Europe Days are organised by Studio Europa Maastricht as part of the Maastricht, Working on Europe programme, set up in 2018 by the province, municipality and university. Last year the Maastricht Europe Days experienced their first edition, this year the programme has been extended to three days with more than 25 events and activities.
Activities
The activities and shows take place throughout the city. At The Student Hotel, Filmhuis Lumière, the Eiffel Building, AINSI, Maastricht University and the City Hall. The programme includes a Running Tour through the city, a live podcast show with professor Mathieu Segers, a played profile of Angela Merkel, a Pop-up Atelier where fashion designers are working on a Europe collection, a pub quiz and baking and eating pancakes with politicians.
Opening
The Maastricht Europe Days will open on Friday afternoon, December 6, with a debate between representatives of EU agencies in Lumière, followed by a reception and then a special interactive theater performance with Mayor Annemarie Penn-te Strake in the Town Hall. A day later, the debate will be continued when former Foreign Ministers János Martonyi and Ben Bot discuss the developments in Europe and the division between East and West in the afternoon in the Statenzaal of the UM Faculty of Law.
Driving dialogue
"The purpose of the Maastricht Europe Days is to enter into a discussion about Europe through workshops, debate, theater and even fashion and sport", said Governor Theo Bovens, who, together with Mayor Annemarie Penn-te Strake and Rector Magnificus Rianne Letschert of Maastricht University is an initiator of Maastricht Working on Europe. Bovens: “Maastricht is the place to think, discuss, and ask sharp questions. Especially in a time where cooperation is needed more than ever and at the same time there is much criticism of European integration. The Europe Days are primarily intended to start the conversation. "
