Increased wealth of knowledge at Brightlands Smart Services Campus

Maastricht University (UM), Zuyd University of Applied Sciences (Zuyd) and the Open University (OU) will expand their activities at the Brightlands Smart Services Campus in Heerlen. The three knowledge institutions now each start their own institute. They continue their successful cooperation through joint projects. The new initiatives will work (together) more decisively on innovation, research and education in the field of digital societies.

The Brightlands Smart Services Campus started in 2016. Under the name ‘BISS’, UM, Zuyd and the OU set up a joint innovation and knowledge institute on the newly established campus, which grew rapidly. Based on that early success, the parties are convinced that there is great potential in this new phase marked by three separately organized yet cooperative concepts.

Focus

Zuyd, OU and UM each concentrate their expertise and activities on campus in their own respective institutes:

  • Zuyd - Zuyd mainly focuses on the short-cyclical linking of knowledge/research to business and government organisations; e.g. by using state-of-the-art technology, through student projects and internships, or through user cases and practical research.
  • CAROU - The OU will assist organisations in the deployment of technological and social innovation through research projects and education on topics such as smart cities, cyber security, smart industry, climate change and continuous learning.
  • BISS – UM is expanding its focus to translational research and education around digital societies, with an eye for the themes health, industry 4.0, public policy & citizenship and smart services.

All three knowledge institutions participate fully in the ecosystem on the Brightlands Smart Services Campus, through collaborations and projects with all sorts of associated parties, and in special programmes of the campus such as Techruption.

About Brightlands

Entrepreneurs, researchers and students connected to multinationals, SMEs and knowledge institutions work on four Brightlands campuses. These campuses are located in Limburg, in the heart of Eindhoven-Leuven-Aachen technology triangle. Each campus has its own expertise. The campuses also focus on the intersections of health, chemistry, materials and nutrition. They use data science, artificial intelligence and blockchain technology.
