Maastricht University signs the Barcelona Declaration on Open Research Information
On 12 June, Maastricht University (UM) officially signed the Barcelona Declaration on Open Research Information during the Open Science Festival Limburg.
The Barcelona Declaration is an international initiative that promotes the use of open and transparent research information. Signatories commit to supporting open systems for research information and reducing reliance on proprietary data sources in research assessment, monitoring and decision-making.
The Declaration therefore marks an important step in the university’s efforts to more transparent, accessible and responsible research information. By signing, UM joins a growing international community of organisations working to make research information more open and reinforces its ambition to improve the way research information is created, shared and used across the academic community.
Rector Magnificus Jan Smits signed the Declaration on behalf of the university and highlighted its significance:
“Maastricht University is committed to conducting research that contributes meaningfully to addressing societal challenges. Open Research Information is essential for demonstrating our societal relevance to stakeholders and for ensuring the transparent evaluation of our ambitions.”
The signing took place as part of the Open Science Festival Limburg, which brought together researchers, support staff and students to exchange ideas and celebrate initiatives that advance Open Science across the university. The festival provided an appropriate setting for this milestone moment, highlighting the close connection between Open Research Information, Open Science and Recognition & Rewards at UM, and reinforcing the university's continued work towards greater openness in research practices.
In the coming years, UM will further explore how the principles of the Declaration can be embedded in its research information systems, assessment practices, and Open Science policy.
