From Venezuela to Greenland: How Trump’s actions are shaking European security
European leadership has had a turbulent start to the year. Following the seizure and arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro by American forces, U.S. President Donald Trump has doubled down on his threats to take Greenland from NATO ally Denmark.
Studio Europa Maastricht spoke with Roberta Haar, Professor of Foreign Policy Analysis and Transatlantic Relations at Maastricht University, about the EU’s reaction to Trump’s actions and their potential consequences for European security.
While there has been widespread speculation about the Trump administration’s real motivations, Haar believes that the arrest of Nicolás Maduro is driven by the Trump administration’s disdain for what the new National Security Strategy document labels the “so-called ‘rules based international order’” and replace it with survival-of-the fittest within spheres of influence.
