Redevelopment of Tapijn officially underway

The redevelopment of the former Tapijn barracks in Maastricht has officially begun. The starting shot was given on 1 April 2019. Literally that is, as a cannon was fired by the Vereniging Historische Artillerie Maastricht to signal the start of construction work. The ceremony was attended by Gert-Jan Krabbendam, Maastricht Alderman for Climate and Energy, Spatial Development and Mobility, Nick Bos, Maastricht University’s vice-president and Joost van den Akker, Deputy Provincie Limburg. It also marked the completion of the reconstruction of the animal park and the Tapijn gardens.

In the coming months, construction work will transform the former military site into an academic centre of learning, including classrooms, study spaces and offices. By early 2020, it will be home to sections of the UM School of Business and Economics and the University Library.

Designer benches to symbolise ‘the memory of Maastricht’

During Monday’s festivities, three memorial benches were unveiled on the site. Designed by regional artist Paul Koenen, the benches are to preserve memories of old reference points in public spaces. "The Memory of Maastricht", as they are called, consist of terrazzo seating elements made from building waste. The benches on Tapijn were made with mineral residual material from the demolished bunker that stood near the spot where the benches are now placed. For a previous project, Koenen mainly worked with mixed granulate from a part of the demolished Noorderbrug. He also added yellow tiles from the Sphinx factory and other pieces of stone from the immediate surroundings of the Eifel building. That project won the Made for Maastricht Design Award in 2017.
