International Law Discussion Group discusses Operation Absolute Resolve
On 5 February 2026, the Maastricht Centre for Human Rights hosted the first session of the International Law Discussion Group (ILDG) in its renewed format. The session focused on Operation Absolute Resolve and the legal questions arising from recent United States military action in Venezuela.
Using short news excerpts as a starting point, participants discussed a range of issues under international law, including the use of force, claims of self-defence and humanitarian intervention, and the classification of the situation under international humanitarian law. The discussion also addressed questions surrounding the capture and prosecution of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, in particular issues of immunity, inviolability, and accountability before domestic and international courts.
Beyond the immediate legal questions, participants reflected on the broader implications of the operation for international law and international peace and security, including the potential impact on established rules governing the use of force and the treatment of state officials.
The International Law Discussion Group offers a regular forum for staff within and beyond the Maastricht Centre for Human Rights to discuss current developments in international law and human rights. Through these sessions, the ILDG aims to encourage exchange, critical reflection, and the development of new ideas for future research and events.
