Miriam Urlings (M.J.E.)
Dr. Miriam Urlings is researcher and teacher with a broad interest in the functioning and correct use of science, especially in relation to food and health. Currently, she is postdoc researcher within the NWO-funded project ‘Protein Transition 2.0’. In this project, she focusses on regulatory questions surrounding the development of alternative proteins in dairy products, with a special interest in the risk assessment process. Next to this project, Miriam is involved in other research projects concerning, among others, health claims, labelling and novel foods.
Miriam’s background is in the field of health sciences, nutrition and research integrity. During her master studies, she developed a broad interest in the use of science in decision making, such as in regulatory questions. Her PhD focussed on citation bias and broader determinants of selective citation in epidemiology, for which she developed a quantitative method to conduct citation analyses.
As teacher, Miriam coordinates 2 statistics courses and the course Information Literacy for students at the bachelor University College Venlo. With these courses, Miriam teaches students the basics of doing and interpreting (quantitative) research, with a special motivation to educate a new generation of critical thinkers. Additionally, she is member of the Board of Examiners of the Maastricht School of Liberal Arts and Sciences and regularly supervises thesis students at the bachelor University College Venlo and master Health Food Innovation Management.
