DNA, Danger and Disease: A Toxicological Journey

In my farewell lecture, I reflect on a career spanning over forty years in genetic toxicology. My research focused on how exposure to harmful substances — from air, food, tobacco, or consumer products — affects our DNA and health. From fundamental laboratory science to applications in public health and policy, the guiding question was always: how can science contribute to a safer, healthier environment?

My work provided molecular evidence linking smoking to lung cancer, revealed the risks of carcinogenic substances in shampoos and alternative tobacco products, and helped advance breath analysis for early disease detection.

In this lecture, I make the case for safeguarding independent research in environmental and public health — especially in an era where science is under growing pressure. I show how fundamental research, education, and collaboration can truly make a difference: for people, for policy, and for a healthier future.
