Politics and Religion, Dutch-Style

The Netherlands has a reputation for tolerance, leading some observers to conclude that religion was not very important to the trade-oriented Dutch. 

Yet at the same time religion has been a strongly polarizing force in Dutch society. Religion and politics could not be separated during important periods of Dutch history.

How can we understand this paradox? And how does this history impact upon current debates about the place of religion in society, most notably Islam.
