"The complexity of multi-hospital oncology networks: a widely used and promising structure without a blueprint"
Hospitals are increasingly collaborating in networks of three or more autonomous hospitals with a shared purpose. Although significant investment is made in these types of networks, a large percentage prove ineffective, leading to a waste of scarce resources. This dissertation therefore examines network effectiveness by: 1) mapping existing knowledge, 2) evaluating patient outcomes, and 3) analyzing crucial network processes. The dissertation argues that networks do have potential, but success requires clear goals, structured processes, and continuous evaluation at both the process and outcome levels. In addition to scientific insights, this dissertation offers practical tools, including a process model that networks can use to optimize their own dissemination processes to increase the likelihood of effectiveness. Scientifically, the dissertation advocates for a more holistic approach to network research: at the level of analysis, in the way networks are evaluated, and by combining insights from various research disciplines.
