Dr Talya Deibel (T.S.)

Talya is an Assistant Professor of Health Law and Ethics at HES. Her expertise lies at the intersection of private law, medical law, and Science and Technology Studies (STS) with a particular focus on trust and responsibility. Her research centers on the norms, values, and practices surrounding healthcare technologies.

Before joining HES, Talya worked as a Senior Postdoctoral Researcher at University College Cork, Ireland, where she became part of the Law and the Inner Self project, exploring the legal implications of the human mind from a transhistorical perspective.

Talya holds a BA in Law (cum laude), an LLM in Law and Economics (summa cum laude), and a PhD in Private Law (summa cum laude) from Bilkent University. Her doctoral research explored the role of ethical principles in European private law, particularly honesty, trust, and reasonableness, in governing market relations.

She has held several postdoctoral research positions, including at the University of Oxford (Oxford Institute of European and Comparative Law, UK), the UNIDROIT Institute and La Sapienza University (Italy), and the University of Amsterdam (Amsterdam Center for Transformative Private Law, Netherlands). These roles further developed her expertise in the legal and ethical implications of emerging technologies, such as biomedical technologies, artificial intelligence (AI) and neurotechnology.

Talya’s current research includes the legal and bioethical implications of the human body, the protection of personhood, and ex-post responsibility for harm to human health and physical integrity. She is particularly interested in the legal challenges posed by the integration of AI-driven technologies into human bodies and their immediate environments.

Her teaching experience includes designing and delivering courses on European private law, legal principles governing healthcare, law and technology, and legal clinics.
