Noor Kleijweg, Alumna bachelor‘s and master’s European Studies

What was it about the ES bachelor’s programme that made you think, ‘This is the one for me’?
I have always been fascinated by the concept of Europe: its rich history, diverse cultures and societies. European Studies offered the opportunity to explore these aspects while also learning more about the political, legal, and economic frameworks that bind the continent together. The programme gave me the chance to explore these different fields together, which helped me get a broader view of Europe and its challenges today.

What made the ES programme unique?
What really stood out to me about the programme was its interdisciplinary approach and the strong international focus. I loved how we could combine subjects like political science, history, law, and economics. The chance to study abroad also played a big role in my decision to choose European Studies; it added an international and adventurous dimension to the programme.

What was your favourite course?
My favourite courses were the ones that dealt with European history. I am a huge history buff, so it was great to explore how past events continue to influence Europe today. Politics and history were definitely the parts of the curriculum that I enjoyed the most. And of course, my Erasmus exchange in Budapest was a huge highlight: it gave me the chance to live in a different European country and see the continent from a fresh perspective.

What was your biggest challenge during your academic career?
The biggest challenge for me was adapting to the world of academic papers and the distinct way of thinking they require. It took time to understand their structure and purpose, and to develop the skills to navigate them effectively. However, once I made that shift, I realised it was not just about meeting academic requirements, but it provided me with critical thinking skills that continue to serve me in many areas of life.

Could you tell us a bit more about your current job?
I currently work in Paris for the Netherlands France Chamber of Commerce, a not-for-profit that helps Dutch companies and entrepreneurs succeed in the French market. We work closely with the Dutch Embassy, and my role involves connecting businesses with the right people and opportunities in France. It’s rewarding to help others navigate the French market and develop their strategies.

How did the bachelor’s or master’s programme help you with your current career?
The interdisciplinary approach of European Studies has been really useful in my current job. I am constantly switching between business and political contexts in France, so the skills I developed in understanding different fields like politics, economics, and law are still very relevant. The international focus also helped me develop a cross-cultural perspective, which is key when working with people from different countries. The communication and problem-solving skills I gained during my studies are definitely things I rely on in my job on a daily basis.

Could you tell me a bit more about your student life in Maastricht?
Moving to Maastricht from the Randstad, I loved how international and friendly the city was, it was so easy to meet new people and feel welcomed. I remember always being very busy, whether it was volunteering with the UNICEF student team and UN Women, performing with Alles is Drama, or organizing vintage sales with a friend. And of course, I also enjoyed Maastricht’s nightlife, where I could relax and have fun with my friends after a busy week.

Are you still in touch with students/staff from FASoS?
Yes, I’m still in touch with my friends from university! Through my job, I also collaborate with the School of Business and Economics, which has been a valuable connection. We organised an event in Maastricht last October, and it was really nice to return to Maastricht and reconnect both professionally and personally. With Maastricht University joining our Chamber as a member starting in January, I’m excited to see what future projects we can collaborate on!

How do you look back on your time in Maastricht / FASoS?
I look back on my time in Maastricht with a lot of fondness and nostalgia. It was the perfect city for my studies, and I am glad I chose it. The atmosphere at FASoS was so welcoming, and it’s always a pleasure to return. Every time I go back, I instantly feel at home again.
