Valedictory lecture Prof. Dr. H.J.M. Marian Majoie
Professor of "Epileptology with a focus on Education" at the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences
“Between Guideline and Reality”
This farewell lecture focuses on the evolution of epileptology, situated between guidelines and reality. Epilepsy has proven to be a complex and heterogeneous condition with a major impact on quality of life and healthcare systems. In recent decades, the field has undergone a radical transformation: from reactive and generic care to personalized, network-oriented, and technology-supported treatment. At the same time, the patient’s role has shifted to that of an active partner.
This progress calls for critical reflection. Not everything that is technically possible is also desirable. Guidelines play an important role here, but the implementation of new knowledge remains slow and fragmented. The gap between science and practice thus remains a challenge.
The future calls for a broader perspective in which scientific evidence, clinical expertise, patient preferences, and societal values converge. Only through efficient collaboration, continuous knowledge development, and informed choices can epilepsy care be organized in a sustainable, effective, and future-proof manner.
