Inaugural lecture Prof. dr. Jeanine J. Prompers
Appointed professor of "Organ-Specific Metabolic Imaging" in the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences
"De spindokter"
Many diseases begin with subtle metabolic changes, long before they become visible on conventional scans. Metabolic imaging allows us to detect these early alterations, enabling earlier intervention, more effective monitoring of treatments, and a more personalized approach to care.
In my inaugural lecture, I will take you into the fascinating world of magnetic resonance and demonstrate how we can use nuclear magnetic resonance to visualize metabolism in living tissues - entirely non-invasively. I will discuss how this technology deepens our understanding of the metabolic disturbances underlying diseases such as diabetes and heart failure, and how medications and lifestyle interventions affect these processes. In doing so, magnetic resonance-based metabolic imaging paves the way for more personalized healthcare and targeted prevention strategies.
At the same time, I will emphasize the importance of a stable scientific infrastructure and sustained investments in education and research. Only then can we successfully translate technological innovation into better healthcare.
