Gabriel Esquivel appointed as Professor of Transforensic Psychiatry
The Executive Board has appointed Dr Gabriel Esquivel as Professor of Transforensic Psychiatry with effect from 1 February 2025. This chair was established by Stichting Mondriaan and is embedded in the Department of Criminal Law & Criminology. Esquivel is associated with Mondriaan as a psychiatrist and researcher. He is the initiator of the concept of transforensic psychiatry, which developed in 2015 by his predecessor at this chair, Professor Joost à Campo, who retired in October 2024.
Esquivel will conduct and initiate research on the developments in the field of health in general, transforensic psychiatry in particular, and their implications for the law. His research will be carried out within the faculty, but he will also participate in interdisciplinary projects with colleagues from other faculties.
In terms of teaching, Esquivel will contribute to the Master’s programme in Forensics, Criminology and Law, where he will make the field of the chair visible in an (elective) course. He will also play a facilitating and supporting role in teaching, including creating and supervising internships and theses.
