On Tuesday 5 November 2024, the 60th US presidential elections will take place. What consequences do these elections - and their results - have for Europe? Studio Europa Maastricht and Maastricht University keep you updated on the latest developments.
Studio Europa Maastricht is a centre of expertise for Europe-related debate and research. Founded in 2018 and supported by the partners of the 'Maastricht, Working on Europe' programme: Maastricht University, the Province of Limburg and the City of Maastricht. The team examines Europe, explores the Treaty of Maastricht, and engages the public in the debate on European integration. Or as Studio Europa Maastricht itself puts it: 'We are #WorkingonEurope.' This also includes the influence of foreign relationships on Europe and the European Union. Needless to say, Studio Europa keenly observes the US elections.

On November 5, the United States will elect a new president, and Brussels will have to establish a relationship with the incoming administration. As the race between Republican candidate Donald Trump and Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris heats up, Studio Europa Maastricht spoke with historian Etienne Augé, Principal Lecturer in the Department of Media and Communication at Erasmus University Rotterdam. We discussed the role of propaganda and religion in the presidential campaign and the future of transatlantic relations if Trump returns to the White House.

The anti-fascist and anti-communist intellectual Arthur Koestler once described World War II as a struggle “against a total lie in the name of a half-truth.” By this, he meant that the allied rhetoric of freedom and democracy was not entirely credible, but still far preferable to the glorification of brute force and obedience to authority of the Axis powers.
This is how we should view the American elections as well.

For quite some time, the American president was called the leader of the free world. As leaders of the world's largest army, several presidents led the West during the Cold War. The free world versus the Soviet Union, which was labelled the evil empire by American president Ronald Reagan.
