MLDS Career Development Grant voor Elhaseen Elamin
Dr. Elhaseen Elamin Maastricht Universitair Medisch Centrum (MUMC) / NUTRIM ontvangt de Career Development Grant voor zijn onderzoek waarin hij mini-darmen gaat kweken uit stamcellen van patiënten met de ziekte van Crohn.
De ziekte van Crohn is een chronische ontstekingsziekte in het spijsverteringskanaal. Bij patiënten met de ziekte van Crohn is de darmbarrière verstoord. Daardoor kunnen schadelijke stoffen makkelijker vanuit de darm het lichaam binnendringen en ontstekingen in stand houden.
Dr. Elamin gaat uitzoeken hoe de barrièrefunctie van de darm wordt verstoord en hoe deze hersteld kan worden. Daarnaast gaat hij testen welke middelen de barrièrefunctie versterken. Zo kan op basis van dit onderzoek in de toekomst een geïndividualiseerde en kosteneffectieve behandeling voor patiënten met de ziekte van Crohn ontwikkeld worden.
