Day of Limburg Landscape History

-

Congress on Limburg Landscape History organized by the Royal Limburg Historical and Archaeological Society (LGOG), FASoS (MACCH), Archaeological Society Limburg (AVL), Regional Historical Centre Limburg (RHCL) and Limburg Museum Venlo.

The Congress is meant to bring together everybody interested in landscape history and landscape as heritage in Limburg with the aim to build a community to share, develop and disperse knowledge on the history of the Limburg landscape. The congress is in Dutch.

Landscape is a main source of identity. The last fifty years the province of Limburg has tried to find a balance between modernization and conservation of landscape values. Landscape history is of key importance to understand today’s landscape and to define specific landscape values. The Research Group ‘Landscape History’ of the Limburg Historical and Archaeological Society tries to stimulate research into landscape history in collaboration with partners in the academic field, cultural, landscape and nature organizations, the local and provincial government, the tourism sector and researchers from local communities. A key concept to be used is that of the ‘landscape biography’, in the Netherlands developed by Jan Kolen. This concept seems very helpful to integrate both geological and historical developments in the landscape over a very long period in time, as well as analyses of present and discussions about future use of the landscape.
