SBE Student Larissa Lintner receives prestigious McCall MacBain Regional Award

School of Business Economics student Larissa Lintner (BSc'25, MSc'26) has been awarded a McCall MacBain Regional Award to pursue her next degree in Canada. This scholarship recognises students who have demonstrated exceptional character, community engagement, leadership potential, entrepreneurial spirit, academic strength, and intellectual curiosity. Larissa is the first student based in the Netherlands to be selected, ranking among the top 150 of thousands of applicants worldwide. UM President Rianne Letschert was able to nominate only one Maastricht University student for this prestigious opportunity. On the recommendation of SBE Dean Marielle Heijltjes and SBE Director of the International Relations Office Lyan Ploumen, Larissa was nominated for the position.

Leadership beyond the classroom

Originally from Germany, Larissa is currently wrapping up a master's degree in Econometrics and Operations Research at the School of Business and Economics (SBE). She also holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Engineering with Cum Laude from the university and works part-time at SBE’s International Relations Office, as project lead for the Dual Degree programme and the Global Innovation Challenge 2026, which she is currently co-organising.

Throughout her studies, Larissa has taken on a wide range of extracurricular activities and leadership roles. She co-organised ICC@M, SBE’s annual international case competition, where she recruited and managed about 70 volunteers. Having previously competed in case competitions herself including winning ENGCOMM in Canada, she now also coaches student teams and serves as a judge, most recently at the BIZZ School Case Competition 2026.

Beyond case competitions, Larissa played a key role in revitalising the Business Engineering study association, BENGI, securing funding and launching a buddy programme for students. She also managed activities for a student surf, skate, and snow sports association and served on both the SBE Student Council and the Educational Programme Committee.

“I feel truly honoured and excited. The award is not just recognition of my past work, but also an encouragement to continue pursuing meaningful opportunities and making an impact. It’s both humbling and energising to know that others believe in my potential.”

“I believe in paying forward the opportunities I have received," Larissa continues. "I have really enjoyed my student life, especially through activities like case competitions, and the initiatives I’m involved in are things I genuinely care about. Being able to enable others to have similar experiences is what motivates me to stay involved," she added.

Larissa's next chapter

Larissa ranked among the top 150 of thousands of applicants this year, and she will receive a C$10,000 Regional Award. This award can be applied to eligible master's or professional studies at any public university in Canada. In September, Larissa will start the master’s programme in Management Specialisation Information Systems at Queen’s University, Canada.

Applications are now open (June 2026) for the 2027 cohort. More information about the McCall MacBain Scholarships can be found at mccallmacbainscholars.org.
