Natural Maastricht: compact city in a wide landscape

On Saturday 12 December a new book in the series: ‘Natuurlijk Limburg’ (Natural Limburg) was published by ‘Stichting Natuurpublicaties Limburg’. The book is called ‘Natuurlijk Maastricht, compacte stad in een weids landschap’, which translates to: ‘Natural Maastricht, compact city in a wide lanscape’.

The book was written by over 30 authors and is the product of a collaboration between four natural organisations in Maastricht: Natuurhistorisch Genootschap Limburg, IVN Maastricht, Flora van Nederland, en Universiteit Maastricht.

One of the authors is dr. Roy Erkens, associate professor at the Maastricht Science Programme of Maastricht University.

Erkens is very happy with the book: ‘The book contains information about the geology, landscape history, urban nature and all natural reserves of Maastricht. Besides the Sint-Pietersberg, the Cannerberg, the ENCI quarry and the subterranean limestone quarries, also the city parks and the natural outskirts of the city are being discussed. The book also describes the waterways, city walls and the Frontenpark, places where nature and cultural history meet. In the book you will find maps with hiking routes, so everyone can explore the know (and unknown) nature of Maastricht.'
