Marijn van der Sluis analyses Europeanisation of national budgets in student Jean Monnet Lecture
On 21 April 2026, Dr. Marijn van der Sluis, Assistant Professor of Constitutional Law at Maastricht University’s Faculty of Law, delivered a student Jean Monnet Lecture within the course Law of the Economic and Monetary Union, taught by Dr. Joeri De Smet, Assistant Professor in European Law. The lecture was organised in collaboration with the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence on Crises and Emergencies in EU Integration (EmergEU).
Titled “Whose Budget Is It? The Europeanisation of National Budgets,” the lecture examined the development of European economic governance since the Maastricht Treaty. Dr. Van der Sluis analysed the rules and supervisory mechanisms through which the EU seeks to shape Member States’ fiscal and economic policies in line with the objectives of the Economic and Monetary Union. Many of these instruments were developed or strengthened in response to crises and emergencies, most notably the euro crisis, in an effort to expand EU oversight of national budgetary policies. The session concluded with an interactive discussion and Q&A with students.
