Law Sector Plan Positively Evaluated: Funding Becomes Structural
On August 21, Minister of Education Eppo Bruins decided to make the funds for the Law Sector Plan and the Digital SSH domain plan structurally available. This decision follows the very positive final evaluation by the SSH Sector Plan Committee earlier this year.
The Law Sector Plan was implemented between 2019 and 2024. The plan focused on strengthening fundamental legal research and related education, and on promoting collaboration between the ten law schools in the Netherlands. The focus was on five societally important spearheads: "Conflict Resolution Institutions," "Digital Legal Studies," "Empirical Legal Studies," "Recalibrating Public Values in Private Relations," and "The Transformative Effect of Globalization in Law."
In its evaluation earlier this year, the Sector Plan Committee highly praised the achievements. It cited a powerful boost to the legal discipline and a strengthening of the connection between education and research. The Committee also concluded that sharp and relevant choices had been made, with ample opportunities for further development. In his letter to Parliament, Minister Bruins also expressed his praise for the strengthening of the profile and the cooperation.
The Council of Deans of Law (In Dutch: Raad der Decanen Rechtsgeleerdheid/RDR) is very pleased with this decision. The Faculty of Law of Maastricht University is also very pleased with the result. This means that funding for the Faculty's chosen priorities, "Digital Legal Studies" and "Transformative Effect of Globalization in Law," will continue in the coming years. The Faculty sincerely thanks Prof. Mariolina Eliantonio, Prof. Gijs van Dijck, and all colleagues involved for their significant role in achieving this success.
