Introducing New Member: Dr Nicole Basaraba
Nicole Basaraba, based in Studio Europa Maastricht as a postdoctoral researcher, is affiliated with MACCH through her collaboration with Vivian van Saaze and with the Faculty of Science and Engineering through her collaboration with Gerhard Weiss and Jerry Spanakis.
Dr Nicole Basaraba completed her PhD in Digital Humanities at Trinity College Dublin, Ireland. Her research focuses on the creative development and evaluation of interactive digital narratives for nonfiction genres. She is particularly interested in creating transmedia narratives for cultural heritage, public history, and digital humanities (DH) projects. Previous case studies for her research include the 11 UNESCO World Heritage Australian Convict Sites, and the Irish National Famine Way.
Throughout her career, Nicole Basaraba has lived and worked in Canada, Ireland, Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands. Prior to her academic career, she developed communications and marketing strategies for government, non-governmental organisations, universities, and the private sector. Her industry experience is embedded into her research questions and outcomes as she continually tries to bridge academia, the creative industries, and society.
Her work as a Postdoctoral Researcher, based in Studio Europa Maastricht, looks at how creative digital placemaking can contribute to the formation of shared European heritage and identity while incorporating the public’s perspectives. She will examine examples of existing placemaking projects and what contributes to (and opposes) the development of a shared sense of European culture and identity in the Meuse-Rhine Euroregion. This work involves the use of computational methods for big data analysis. Therefore, she will be collaborating with researchers in contemporary history; heritage, arts and literature; and computer science. The results of her work aim to contribute to academic research, industry best practices, and European cultural policy.
Nicole Basaraba is currently a member of the EU COST Action on Interactive Narrative Design for Complexity Representations (indcor.eu) and is part of the organising committee for the upcoming ACM Hypertext and Social Media Conference 2021.
She is open to collaborations, so please feel free to connect with her on Twitter @nicolebasaraba, through LinkedIn, or visit her website.
