'Best thesis of 2019' - two UM students nominated

Two students from Maastricht University (UM) – Liza Gordin and Tessa Groen – have been nominated by the jury for the Higher Education Thesis Prize for the title of 'best thesis of 2019'. On Friday 20 March, Minister Ingrid van Engelshoven will announce the winner in the Senate.

Liza Gordin wrote her thesis on first generation students in Limburg. Her data research shows that there are still no equal opportunities for students in Limburg regarding the question whether or not to participate in higher education. Often the choice between higher professional or university education depends on what family members have studied. In her thesis, Gordin provides recommendations for professionals, researchers and politicians to tackle this problem. Among other things, she argues for actively involving and informing parents who have never had higher education themselves, and offering pre-academic training for first-generation students.

Tessa Groen wrote her thesis on the international rankings of universities and colleges. Her goal was to find out what effect the international rankings have on the policies and education of universities and colleges. The differences appear to be large: some institutions are rarely involved in the provision of information for rankings, whereas for other institutions it is a continuous part-time job for three days a week.
