Valedictory lecture Prof. Dr. Carroll Webers
Professor of "Ophthalmology" at the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences
"Constanten in Leiderschap: Houvast in verandering"
My farewell lecture is a reflection on purpose, leadership, and professional development, based on a long career in academic healthcare. Its core aim is to share insights and practical lessons that are broadly applicable. It addresses major changes in healthcare, including increasing complexity, workforce shortages, and the need to focus on value for both patients and professionals. It also reflects on the evolution of training programs and the challenges related to workload and generational differences.
Leadership is approached through a set of core values and translated into practical focus areas such as clear communication, engagement, consistency, and dealing with resistance and conflict. Emphasis is placed on providing direction, strengthening collaboration, and taking responsibility.
The central message is that effective leadership requires clarity, reliability, and the ability to guide people through change, while maintaining a strong focus on shared goals and outcomes.
