“Positive Educational Design: Competence and Wellbeing in the Health Professions Education”
Health professions education is richer than ever. Digital technology has made the world bigger, enabled personalised learning, and put authentic tasks centre stage. Yet student wellbeing has not automatically improved. In this inaugural lecture, I argue that competence development and student wellbeing only go hand in hand when you deliberately design for it.
The lecture addresses three developments: students learn in a digital environment that was never designed for education, digitalisation in education disrupts the balance between autonomy and competence, and learning environments still treat wellbeing as a by-product.
Positive Educational Design stands for responsible use of digital technology with explicit attention to digital literacy, a balance between autonomy and competence, and a design approach in which safety, connection and structure optimally support students and teachers in their roles. After all, education remains a human endeavour.
