UM Data Science Research Seminar

Research Seminar with Clinical Data Science

The UM Data Science Research Seminar Series are monthly sessions organized by the Institute of Data Science, in collaboration with different departments across Maastricht University. The aim of these sessions is to bring together scientists from all over Maastricht University to discuss breakthroughs and research topics related to Data Science.  This seminar is organized in collaboration with Clinical Data Science Maastricht.

All events are in-person and free of charge. We also offer participants a free lunch.

Title‘Towards Shared Decision-Making in Oncology: A Data-Driven Approach to Predict Post-Treatment Side Effects’

Abstract
Shared Decision Making (SDM) stands at the forefront of patient-centered care, especially in preference-sensitive scenarios such as localized prostate cancer treatment. Alongside, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is changing the game, making healthcare more tailored to each person's needs. This synergy between AI and SDM is demonstrated by our recent endeavors to predict two common post-treatment side effects of prostate cancer: erectile dysfunction (ED) and urinary incontinence (UI).
We employed ProZIB dataset contained data of from 964 localized prostate cancer patients from 69 Dutch hospitals. In the first study about ED, we used logistic regression to predict who might experience ED 1 year and 2 years after their diagnosis. In the second study about UI, we tried three different machine learning methods to see which could best predict who might experience UI 1 year and 2 years after treatment.
These findings highlight the potential of AI in SDM for prostate cancer treatment. Both studies underline the importance of transparency and explainability in ML models, assisting clinicians in recognizing high-risk patients and making informed treatment decisions.

Title‘The STRONG-AYA Initiative: Improving the Future of Adolescents and Young Adults with Cancer’

Abstract
Adolescents and Young Adults (AYAs) are the heartbeat of society, but when confronted with cancer, their world takes an unexpected pause. AYAs that unfortunately have to face cancer experience disease in a starkly different way, which sets them apart from younger and older individuals.
In healthcare, AYAs are a distinct and often overlooked demographic with unique and urgent care needs that demand dedicated attention. With the STRONG-AYA Initiative, we will strengthen the future of AYAs with cancer by shaping cancer care of tomorrow, for and with AYAs. We do this by building a FAIR and federated data ecosystem with medical centers across Europe. With this data ecosystem, we strive to design and provide new ways of engagement with up-to-date AYA cancer care data through a co-creation process with various stakeholders.
