"Optimizing weight loss outcomes in bariatric surgery" 

A patient with severe obesity (body mass index ≥ 40 kg/m2 or body mass index ≥ 35 kg/m2 with a comorbidity) is eligible for gastric reduction surgery. Several surgeries have proven successful in reducing weight and treating associated diseases. Studies have shown that about 75% of patients have lost a lot of weight long-term. The remaining 25% have failed to achieve the goal, often due to regaining weight. This problem is examined in this dissertation and is summarized as non-response. It describes which patients are at risk of developing non-response. It also describes how non-response is treated in current practice and what measures can be taken to reduce non-response rates.
