"Towards optimized pharmacotherapy in older adults with personality disorders: A clinical and empirical exploration"
This thesis examines medication use in older adults with personality disorders and its impact on cognitive functioning and quality of life. Personality disorders are common in later life and can make it harder to cope with major life changes. While psychotherapy is the primary treatment, medication is often used as an addition. However, there is limited evidence on its effectiveness and safety in older adults. The studies in this thesis show that polypharmacy (the use of multiple medications) is highly prevalent and associated with more side effects. These side effects, rather than the number of medications, appear to have a significant impact on quality of life. Cognitive difficulties are also partly related to medication use and mood. Overall, the findings highlight the need for careful decision-making regarding medication, regular reviews, and close monitoring of side effects and cognitive functioning to improve care and quality of life in older adults with personality disorders.
