"Connecting Present and Past: Trauma-Informed Care in Adult Forensic Mental Health Services"

This thesis explored how trauma-informed care can be applied in adult forensic mental health services. Many people receiving treatment in forensic psychiatric hospitals have experienced traumatic events such as abuse, neglect, violence, or unstable living conditions. These experiences can have a lasting impact on their mental health, relationships, and behavior. However, forensic treatment has traditionally focused on managing risk and preventing reoffending, rather than addressing the effects of trauma.

Using literature research, observations, surveys, and interviews with both staff and patients, this thesis examined how trauma-informed current practice is and what challenges exist. The findings showed that professionals generally support trauma-informed care, but training opportunities are limited and trauma-informed principles are not always reflected in daily practice. Both staff and patients described tensions between safety measures and patients’ need for autonomy, trust, and collaboration. The thesis concludes that greater attention to trauma, staff training, and reflective practice may improve treatment experiences and support recovery while maintaining public safety.
