Inaugural lecture Dr. Sophie Vanbelle

Appointed as Professor of "Methodology & Statistics" in the Faculty of Psychology  and Neuroscience

"Nothing is perfect, and that matters: A statistical perspective on assessments and measurements"

Measurements and assessments are fundamental to quantitative research in psychology, health and life sciences. Yet they are never perfect. The same characteristic, measured by different observers on the same persons, can produce different results.

In my inaugural lecture, I explain why this uncertainty matters and how statistics can help us to understand it and make it visible. Drawing on examples from psychology, obstetrics, sensor data and artificial intelligence, I present my research on inter-observer variation and the development of statistical methods to quantify it. I also look to the future: new technologies are producing increasingly large and complex amounts of data, but the fundamental question remains unchanged: how much can we trust our measurements?
