Opening Academic Year 2022/23

We are opening the academic year 2022/23 in the Theater aan het Vrijthof on Monday 5 September 2022.

The programme includes an inspiring keynote lecture by Robbert Dijkgraaf, Minister of Education, Culture, and Science. Students of the Young Universities for the Future of Europe (YUFE) alliance will discuss the importance of this 'borderless' educational project with Minister Dijkgraaf and Marieke van den Berg, HR Director Northern Europe at Adecco, an associate partner of YUFE. Additionally, Rector Pamela Habibović will present the Edmond Hustinx Prize as well as the UM Student Award.

Watch the livestream video; footage of the event starts at 22:11. The highlights will be published on a separate page tomorrow, Tuesday 6 September.

Thema: ‘(Re)thinking borders: rails of creativity’

Maastricht University strives to be groundbreaking in its research, education, and impact in the Netherlands, Europe, and beyond. However, borders and boundaries are still important when reflecting on the growth of the university, limits to workload, and the obstacles presented by physical boundaries. Borders and boundaries in the broadest sense are central to this ceremony.

We are honoured to host Robbert Dijkgraaf as our keynote speaker. Although he is currently the Minister of Education, Culture, and Science, some of his previously held positions include Professor at the University of Amsterdam, President of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, and Director of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. He has received several awards for his work, including the inaugural Iris medal for his public appearances. Robbert Dijkgraaf excels at translating complex material into a clear story for a wide audience. In his speech at the opening ceremony of the academic year, he will take us through his perspectives and insights.
