Molecular Catalysis Empowering the Reuse of Waste Carbon into Chemicals and Polymers
Our society faces a huge challenge to improve and advance chemical production processes to become as circular as possible and with a more favorable carbon footprint. Biomass-derived, carbon-rich feedstock including terpenes, carbon dioxide and fatty acids are versatile and readily available starting materials allowing to design chemical intermediates and monomers through molecular (homogeneous) catalysis.
Key to the success of biomass transformations is the selection of an appropriate catalyst that helps to create added value from these low-value precursors while adding functionality and complexity. In addition, new conceptual developments give rise to novel types of applications and the exploration of new chemical space amplifying the role of biobased precursors in industrial manufacturing. This seminar will discuss how sustainable main group catalysts offer and expand the conversion opportunities of carbon-based matter, widen their application potential and highlights the mechanistic features that guide these processes. This contribution intends to inspire the communities to design future catalytic processes with an intention towards carbon-neutrality.
