Art Meets Science #5: Myths and Current Affairs

Studium Generale | Conversation

In cooperation with Bonnefanten, Studium Generale organises special encounters between art and science. Our guest this time is the artist Mounira Al Solh (Beirut, 1978).

In conversation with professor of Classical Philology at the University of Freiburg, Jacqueline Klooster, we will talk about myths and their meaning today in relation to feminism. Jacqueline Klooster is the author of Medusa in de spiegel, about what myths tell us about who we are.

We address different aspects of Mounira Al Solh's work, which is often a reflection of a world that bears the deep marks of oppression and abuse of power. She explores themes like individuality, migration, trauma and inequality, arising from factors like gender, origin and social class, or a combination of them. She grew up in war-ravaged Lebanon. This painful history shines through in her work, which is about staying strong and never giving up. Radiating melancholy and hope, it is humorous, cheerful and colourful.

In her first solo exhibition in the Netherlands, Mounira Al Solh proves that hope, culture and stories know no bounds. The exhibition at Bonnefanten is on show until 11 January (www.bonnefanten.nl).

This programme is organised in cooperation with Bonnefanten.
