Expertises
Anna Herranz-Surrallés' research concentrates on EU energy policy and global energy governance. Some of her recent work has examined the emergence of EU energy diplomacy and green industrial policy, the (geo)politicization of energy investments and infrastructure, or the changing paradigms and practices of energy cooperation in the EU’s relations with neighbouring countries.
Anna is the PI of the NWO-Aspasia project on "Dangerous Assets?: Foreign Investment Governance in times of De-globalization", focusing on the social construction of foreign investment as a threat to national security.
Her broader research interests include the practices of legitimation and democratic control of foreign economic and security policies, the international promotion and diffusion of policy ideas, as well as theories and methods of discourse analysis.
Anna's work has appeared in journals such as West European Politics, Journal of Common Market Studies, Mediterranean Politics, Cooperation & Conflict, Journal of European Integration, or Journal of European Public Policy.
Anna Herranz-Surrallés is also visiting professor at the College of Europe (Natolin Campus); Co-editor of Journal of European Integration; member of the international advisory board of the International Spectator; and steering group member of the ECPR Energy Politics, Policy and Governance research network.

Career history
Anna Herranz-Surrallés is Associate Professor of International Relations at the Department of Political Science of Maastricht University. She joined Maastricht University in 2012 as a lecturer and Marie Curie researcher. In previous appointments, Anna was Juan de la Cierva post-doctoral researcher at the Institut Barcelona d’Estudis Internacionals (IBEI) and held visiting fellowships at the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies (OIES), the Peace Research Institute Frankfurt (PRIF), Aberystwyth University, the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP) and the Department of Political Science of Copenhagen University. Anna obtained her PhD in International Relations and European Integration from the Autonomous University of Barcelona.
