UM Research Calls in 2025 aimed at Circularity and a Sustainable UM campus
Maastricht University launched two new research calls in 2025: one on circularity, and one on making UM campus more sustainable. With a total pool of around €600.000, researchers can apply for grants of up to €75.000!
These calls are part of UM’s commitment to accelerating the transition to a sustainable, climate-neutral and circular campus by 2035 with a healthy and thriving community. The calls are designed to support innovative, interdisciplinary research projects advancing circularity and sustainability at UM and across the Limburg region. Match-making events were organised in September 2025 where researchers had the opportunity to connect, exchange ideas, pool their expertise and knowledge to conceptualize ideas that can help build a knowledge base on the specific challenges and opportunities.
UM recognizes the pressing need to accelerate the transition to a circular economy both within the university and across the Limburg region, aligning with its vision of being a circular campus in the coming years. Through the Circularity Research Call , we invite UM researchers to apply for seed funding to launch interdisciplinary, cross-faculty projects that strengthen circular practices across the Limburg region. In alignment with ERCE’s (Expertise Centre for Regional Circular Economy) data-driven vision, the projects would support UM’s ambition to be a ‘living lab’ that models and advances the principles of circular economy in education, research and operations. In this manner, UM collaborates with regional stakeholders across the Limburg region, contributing to the evidence base to link academic insights with real-world impact.
Furthermore, to bring sustainability research at UM to next level and fostering this transition to a sustainable UM, we invite UM researchers to submit applications for seed fund projects aimed at fostering interdisciplinary and cross-faculty research collaboration, with a focus on advancing sustainable practices to achieve climate-neutral or circular UM operations while improving community well-being. The Sustainable UM Research Call would take in diverse topics that can range from sustainable catering, mobility, real estate, energy solutions, to material flow analysis, campus procurement, among others. By translating theoretical knowledge and proof-of-concepts into practical applications, the valorisation of this research will drive UM toward a sustainable future.
