Dr. Elvira Bombino began her scientific journey with a BSc in Medical and Pharmaceutical Biotechnology, followed by an MSc in Medical Biotechnology and Molecular Medicine from the University of Bari, Italy. During her first internship, she contributed to clinical trials focused on treatments for Friedreich’s Ataxia. She later expanded her expertise by working on drug development for rare diseases, applying both computational and experimental approaches. In 2017, Elvira moved to the Netherlands to pursue a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship within the EU-funded H2020 Es-Cat Innovative Training Network at the University of Groningen. Her research focused on the computational design and screening of enantioselective enzymes. As part of her Ph.D., she completed research stays at the University of Stockholm, DSM, and the University of Münster. Elvira is also deeply committed to science communication. She served as a member of the Italian Association for Mitochondrial Research in Bari (2015–2017), coordinated Pint of Science Groningen in 2019, and chaired the BeNeLux Chapter of the Marie Curie Alumni Association (2020–2022), representing 510 members. In 2022, she joined the Center of Digital Innovation at Royal DSM in Delft. Since 2023, Elvira has been working as a scientist in protein modeling and engineering within the Data Science department at DSM-Firmenich

At the WiDS Maastricht 2025 Conference, Elvira will hold a talk entitled "Cross-Disciplinary innovation with Data & AI at DSM-Firmenich", together with Leila Joulaeizadeh.
