The hacker group ShinyHunters has posted messages in the Canvas environment at a number of educational institutions stating that they have regained or still have access to the system. As a precautionary measure, UM has disconnected all systems linked to Canvas.
During the first weekend of May, the supplier of the educational software Canvas reported that user data had been stolen in a global cyberattack. UM also uses the Canvas digital learning environment. On this page, you will find updates and the latest information about this situation.

Update 12 May 13:00 hours | Canvas has been reconnected
Canvas has been reconnected and is largely available for use following a successful round of testing this morning. This means that students and staff should now be able to work with Canvas without any issues.
Update 12 May 09:00 hours | Canvas is being restarted today
This morning, it was decided to restart Canvas today. This decision was based on the checks and risk analyses carried out over the past few days, which show that Canvas can be safely reconnected.
Update 11 May 18:00 hours
Canvas is still unavailable. We are doing everything we can to safely restore access to Canvas later this week. Please remain vigilant for phishing mails.

Canvas is still unavailable to UM students and staff. This is causing significant disruption to both teaching and learning. However, we naturally want to be certain that Canvas can be ‘reconnected’ safely. Work on restoring the connection continued throughout the weekend.

As a security precaution, Canvas was taken offline today and was therefore unavailable to students and staff. Unfortunately, we must seriously consider the possibility that Canvas may still be unavailable after the weekend.
