"Analyzing European Union Health Legislation and Policy Making: The Development of an Analytical Model"
The research of this PhD dissertation has focused on the development of an analytical model for EU health policy making. EU health policy is a policy area that is very different to other EU policy areas. The competence for health policy is shared between the EU and its Member States. EU health policy is made through different EU policy competence fields. It therefore requires a different analytical approach.
Health policy is not a silo policy area. It includes the competence fields (also named channels) of public health, internal market law (product law) and employment law (for any legislation focusing on health and safety at the workplace). For this purpose, different existing EU theories have been examined for their appropriateness to analyse the three different channels of EU health policy and law making. Finally, with elements retrieved from relevant existing theories, a new analytical model has been developed and tested on various case studies in this thesis.
