"Vascular Regulation in Early Life: Umbilical Vessels and Endothelial Dysfunction"

This thesis explores the development and adaptation of blood vessels during the transition from fetal to newborn life. Prior to birth, blood vessels operate within a unique environment, regulating blood flow to support both the baby and the placenta. At birth, this environment changes suddenly, demanding rapid cardiovascular adjustments. The study investigates how umbilical cord blood vessels regulate contraction and relaxation, showing their behavior is specialized for fetal life rather than immature. It also considers how abnormal development, due to premature birth or intensive medical procedures, impacts these vascular processes. Findings indicate that pre- and postnatal conditions can influence endothelial cell function. Overall, the research provides new insights into how early-life experiences may shape vascular health from the very beginning.
