Frank Thuijsman

Since 2016, I am a full professor of Strategic Optimization and Data Science at the Department of Advanced Computing Sciences. Following my valedictory lecture in January 2026, I transitioned to Professor Emeritus status. I remain actively engaged with the Department of Advanced Computing Sciences (DACS) on a part-time basis, continuing my work in research, project initialization, and strategic academic partnerships.

My expertise is on (Dynamic and Evolutionary) Game Theory, Operations Research, Markov Decision Theory, Stochastic Processes, Data Science and Mathematics. As of 2023, I am the secretary and treasurer of the Game Theory Society. I have published on Game Theory in a wide range of domains and I have had visiting positions in the Departments of Mathematics at the University of California at Los Angeles and at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. In 2016, I served as the local chair for the 5th World Congress of the Game Theory Society, and from 2023 onwards I am serving this society as its secretary and treasurer.

On the educational side, I have been actively involved in organizing our Data Science and Artificial Intelligence bachelor program, as well as our Artificial Intelligence and Data Science for Decision Making master programs. In 2014, I founded the KE@Work honors program, in which the best BSc students Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (formerly known as Knowledge Engineering) combine their studies during their full second and third year on a fifty-fifty basis with a half-time challenging assignment at a nearby business. Over 200 students and over 70 businesses have participated thus far.

As of 2025, I am leading a World Bank funded project in which Maastricht University is supporting the University of Burundi in setting up a Computer Science bachelor program using our Project Centered Learning (PCL) method.
