"Making Health In Low-income Neighborhoods:Theorizing citizen participation and local knowledge"

This thesis presents a study of neighbourhood health as a matter of local knowledge and citizen participation. It starts with the question of how healthy places can be understood and realized through the ideas and practices of those that take part in them. Studying three low-income neighbourhoods in the south of the Netherlands, the study is situated in the context of health disparities and high expectations of citizens’ participation in the provision of welfare arrangements. Applying an ethnographic approach to neighbourhood participation and health, it covers resident participation in public settings like parks, as well as community networks. Building on Community Based Participatory Research (CBPR), and academic work in the field of Science and Technology studies (STS), the thesis presents an analysis of different collaborations with citizens to share local health knowledge.
